TOPIC: 2010 'Harriers verses Cyclists'

2010 'Harriers verses Cyclists' 9 years 11 months ago #64

I know this is a bit 'behind the times' now, but.....

I entered this 'nut-case' of an event again last November, for the 4th successive year

http://www.bingleyharriers.co.uk/html/h_v_cyclists/hvc.htm

2007; Bike = 54:16 ('Featherstone')
2008; Bike = 54:15 ('Featherstone')
2009; Run = 48:12 ('Featherstone')
2010; Run ('Ackworth Road-Runners')

It's always a heck of a start, with a horrible hill to begin with

I saw Paul Milsom (Calder Clarion) at the start - he bet me last year by a minute - & never saw him again till after the finish;) (bet him by a 1.30 this year)

The entrants are roughly a 50-50 mix of fell-runners & cyclists (MTBers & cross)

However, the 2010 event was meant to be a 'showdown' as 2 of Bingley Harriers top members were due to have a 'head to head', they being Rob Jebb ('Mr Three Peaks') & Alistair Brownlee (the ex-World Triathlon Champion)

The course was its usual self of cow-shit drenched fields, concrete farm-tracks, boulder-strewn climbs, open moorland & bogs!

The course

Suffering on the way 'out', after catching & passing(!!!) Richard Thackray (the ex-international cross-rider)

My time/position for this attempt at the race??

47:08
Overall = 63rd/146
Runners = 41st 106

Nice one thackers, were there no bogs on the course? Or did the photographer catch you just before ( You had that pee that you are holding your knees together to prevent escaping)..........................kidding!

Andy

The 3 fields after the start (before the finish) were deep enough in mud/cow-shit to stop some people from pedalling in full-circles!

Out on the 'course proper' the boggy bits came later.
If you look at the map, that pic was taken on the ascent after crossing 'Glen Road', on the way up to the balloon (think of the course as 'up the string, round the balloon - clockwise, & back down the string')

The worst mud/bog was around the north (& east) sides of Hope Hill

When I left my (near namesake) Richard Thackray (the Bradford Olympic/ex-Pace Research team rider/ex GB Cyclo-Cross squad)
It was - if you look at the attached map, I caught him at the rocky-track that turns sharp right to go towards 'Glen Road' & left him on the climb to the summit at Baildon Hill (he was on his cross-bike)
He only re-passed me on the descent back to 'Glen Road', from the caravan park.

That said, Jebby passed me on his way back as I got to the farm where the course diverges to circumnavigate Hope Hill!!!! (clockwise around the hill)

But... I also passed the last competitors (both runners & riders) on the descent, a couple hundred yards before, 'Glen Road', on my return!!!!!!

RE: the Brownlee - Jebb showdown I mentioned

Alistair didn't show up for some reason, neither did his (junior world champion) brother

Here's a link to the rest of the photos from that particular supporters album;

In addition to the words added in response earlier this morning, here's a few more... with some pictures

Regarding the 'horrible hill' at the start mentioned earlier in this interesting post... drivel

This is it... The 'Leeds & Liverpool Canal' is behind, just west of Dowley Gap Aquaduct (foranyone who knows the area)

Paul Milsom (Calder) on the way 'out', in practically the same place as the photo of me was taken

And..... here's what someone had to say about the 2009 event, on the Bingley Harriers website........
Quote
This has got to be the craziest race of the season.
Unless I was seeing things I saw a guy dressed as Spiderman on a cross bike with a broken saddle........
Pregnant ladies taking numbers at the finish and a start view covered in grass........
Only when tilting the head backwards could you see the way to go it was that steep!
A bit less muddy than last year in the start and finish fields, if my memory serves me right.

Nice to see so many supporters.
Nice to see that tree trunk as well....almost didn't!.....well placed marshall!!!!!

I especially enjoyed the spectator cheers as you cleared rocks at the campsite road on the way back....just before nearly breaking a leg in the gully just beyond.

Thanks to all the marshalls and the pub staff / landlord. 2 helpings of pie and peas and a pint reminded me why I'm not a good runner.
Cracking event!

Yeah, I think Brian will be about that age.

I haven't seen any of them since 2003 when I stopped running but Ken did the marathon that year when I did it and he was old then! I saw him running round here not long ago, with Christine, not sure if she is still in the club though.

Tell them I said hello when you see them!

Sure, but I don't know your surname to tell him who is 'asking after him'

If you mean Christine Hall, she's still a mamber, but has very recently moved down to Ipswich as one daughter is in the Army

It was Christine, who got me involved in 'Ackworth', after seeing & speaking with her at the 'Trunces' down at Oxspring

Surname is Blackburn!

Yep, Christine Hall, that's the one! I used to run quite a bit with Stewart Haigh too, not sure if he is still at it.

I used to love running with Ackworth, bad for your joints though, hips especially. At least I didn't puncture...two in three days I've had now!
